Chapter Forty-Six

The Leader

Tuesday Night

I snatch the phone the instant it rings. I’m expecting a call from—what should I call him, termination professional or terminator? I need the expert’s help to secure a small yet deadly device. My pre-nuptial gift to the groom. Arranging communication has been a circuitous process. While I thoroughly approve, time is getting tight.

“Quincy, I’m scared. Not sure what to do, where to go.”

Matt’s frantic conversational launch is quite inopportune. Need to get him off the line. Can’t miss the arranged call. Doubt my terminator would have much patience if my phone goes repeatedly to voicemail. My burner phone doesn’t have call waiting. Not designed for chewing the fat.

“What now?” I bark. “Are you at the I-95 motel?”

“No, had to ditch the van. It’s damaged. Parked it at the back of a used-car lot. Called Jacob to pick me up. Ryan’s dead.

“Dead? What? How?”

Matt delivers his FUBAR tale in staccato bursts. Wish I hadn’t answered the phone. Periodically, I stop Matt to ask questions. Guess I’m lucky Ryan’s the one who bought the farm and not Matt. Ryan would be a stuttering basket case, screwing things up even more.

“I need to get off the phone. But let me make sure I understand,” I say. “You took Ryan’s cellphone and his wallet before dumping his body, right? No one will be able to identify him immediately, and there’s nothing on the body to tie him to any of us?”

“Right,” Matt affirms. He seems much calmer now that he’s handed me the mess to straighten out.

“I also wiped the van down and removed the plates,” he adds. “The van might go unnoticed for a day or more.”

“You’re sure those kids and the two in the Lexus never saw your face?”

“I’m sure,” Matt replies. “The fog did us a real favor. What do I do now?”

I close my eyes. Control my breathing. My plan has progressed to the point where I don’t need—or want—Matt and Jacob anymore.

Should I kill them? Eliminate all loose ends. Need to think about that.

“Are you still checked into the I-95 motel we met at earlier?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, stay there until morning. Don’t go outside. Make sure no one sees you. Understood? By tomorrow, I’ll have a definite plan.”

Less than five seconds tick away between the time I hang up and a new incoming call.

“Here,” I answer. I don’t say another word as the caller spells out the details of tomorrow’s ten o’clock meet at the always-crowded Charleston City Market. His fee will totally wipe out the last of my financial reserves.

Think of it as an investment. You’ll reap millions in return.
